The fastest way to map your digital divide.
What is BroadbandThing?
A simple sensor that listens for publicly broadcast WiFi. When it is near a house in your city, it logs the location.
Who is BroadbandThing for?
We work with municipal CIOs, Digital Equity leaders, Mayors, and anyone else who cares about the problems of the digital divide. Our tool was created exclusively for urban use, as the digital divide problems for rural citizens are mostly access based, whereas a plethora of problems affect the digital divide in an urban space. We help you focus on the final metric that matters to your digital divide: adoption.
How would it work for my city?
Simple! Reach out to us here: (318) 703-5982 We'll have an initial meeting to discuss logistics and needs. Once that happens, we'll send our sensors to you. You'll work with your fleet managers to place our sensors on top of your vehicles. They'll be secured with very strong magnets.
Who will I be working with?
Not long ago, our team was in your shoes. All of the founders and advisors on our team are retired government officials who saw a need and created a solution.
What fleet vehicles do you use?
Garbage trucks! They go down every street every week!
Why is WiFi data useful?
Typically, when you can see a WiFi connection in a home, it is backed by an internet connection. You can use this to determine where adoption is NOT happening in your city and target outreach, investments, and more to increase internet adoption in your city.
What is an Urban Digital Divide?
Urban digital divides typically do not have access issues. Most cities have SOME form of wire next to every house, ready to offer broadband through subsidies like the ACP and more. But while these options are available, the reasons for urban citizens not adopting are many. Trying to cover your entire city with paper surveys, phone banking efforts, and other methods is untenable for most budgets. That's where we come in. When you need to know exactly where to target your limited funds, our tool will give you a precise map for where you can have the greatest impact per dollar.
